This is a question we get asked quite a bit.
“Just how do I get a visa to study in Australia?”
Now, please be advised that the below advice is general in nature and you should seek professional legal advice for clarification on the law and how different aspects apply to you and your Visa application.
It is a requirement set by the Australian Government for international students to acquire student visas before applying for admittance into Australian universities and colleges.
The process of student visa applications is not that complicated, but largely depends on the country from which the student applies for the visa. Some countries have longer application processes, and it is for this reason that students are advised to seek the help of commissioned Australian education agents.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), which is a unit within the Australian government, gives diverse assistance to students who may encounter difficulties in the application process. The unit has offices in embassies/consulates all over the world, and is charged with the responsibility of issuing student visas.
Improvements on Student Visas
In the year 2010, the Australian Government reviewed the student visa application process, and came up with some improvements that touched on the various aspects. Most of the changes touched on the rules and conditions that surround the application process.
The recommendations were summed up in what is now referred to as the ‘Knight Review’. Most international students appreciate the changes, as it has now become easier to study in Australia, while at the same time, the quality and integrity of the student visa program has improved.
The actual application is not complicated at all, but key attention must be paid to certain key areas. Before starting the process, the applicant must read all information about student visas and the different visa options available.
This information is available on the Australian Government’s website. Online applications are acceptable.
Don’t Miss Information
Online applicants are encouraged to reveal as much information as possible during the time they are lodging their applications. Applications missing critical information usually take a longer period of time to process, or may even be discarded.
Students who are victims of default cases by education providers must first meet the necessary requirements, and accompany this with the stipulated online processing fee.
Courses not going beyond three months can be undertaken using a visitor visa, but for those which extend longer, a student visa must be obtained.
Courses under three months’ duration can be undertaken on a visitor visa or courses of up to four months on a working holiday visa. If you intend to study a longer course, you must apply for a student visa.
